From Global News.
A powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula triggered tsunami waves of up to five metres nearby and sparked evacuation orders as far away as Hawaii and across the Pacific on Wednesday.
The earthquake followed a magnitude 7.5 foreshock recorded 10 days earlier. While the quake struck a sparsely populated area in Russia, Liu warned that countries along subduction zones should remain alert.
A kindergarten was damaged in Russia’s Far East, but no casualties have been reported so far.
The tsunami advisory for B.C., Canada, has been cancelled for all zones, according to Emergency Info BC. The advisory had been issued Tuesday night local time after the earthquake hit, with tsunami waves expected to hit parts of Canada, the U.S. and Japan.
