Mahmoud Khalil, a recent Columbia University graduate and one of the most prominent faces of the university’s high-profile pro-Palestinian protests in the spring of 2024, was arrested by US immigration officials in early March despite holding a permanent residency green card. His arrest has triggered outrage from critics of the Trump administration as well as free speech advocates, including some on the political right, who say such a move has a chilling effect on freedom of expression.
