Jean-Martin Bauer, director of the World Food Programme’s food security analysis, defends the UN declaration that there is famine in Gaza, saying the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Initiative (IPC) used is the “gold standard for food security analysis worldwide". The famine was declared by experts at the Rome-based IPC, who says it affects 500,000 people in the Gaza governorate, which covers about a fifth of the Palestinian territory including Gaza City.
