Spain’s Bioparc Fuengirola welcomed the birth of an endangered Malayan tapir cub on March 29, marking a key achievement in global conservation efforts for the threatened species.
The cub was born after an approximately 13-month gestation period at the park in southern Spain. Both the mother and calf are on quarantine period, with a dedicated nursing staff to monitor them, head of zoology Javier Vicent told Reuters.
This birth is among the 25 recorded in zoos worldwide in the past decade and the first in Spain, Vicent said.
The head of zoology also said the Malayan tapir species has a global population of no more than 2,500, mainly because of habitat destruction.
