South Korea president indicted on charges of insurrection

From Global News.

South Korea’s prosecutors indicted suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol on Sunday on charges of leading an insurrection with his short-lived imposition of martial law on Dec. 3, the Yonhap news agency reported.

Anti-corruption investigators last week recommended charging the jailed president.

Yoon, impeached and suspended from power on Dec. 14, has been incarcerated since Jan. 15 while investigators probe his attempt to impose martial law. The move shocked the nation even though the parliament overturned it within hours.

The dramatic events of recent weeks have plunged South Korea into a political crisis that has dragged on the economy and raised concerns among allies, including the U.S., about the country’s political stability.
