Thousands of Israelis took part in a nationwide strike on Sunday in support of families of hostages held in Gaza, calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach an agreement with Hamas to end the war and release the remaining captives.
“I’m here today because this is our last chance to stop the insanity, stop the war, stop the government from sacrificing the hostages, sacrificing many more soldiers, sacrificing basically us and the Palestinian people for its own political gain," said Israeli protester Tamar Merin.
Israeli police scuffled with protesters blocking the road in Jerusalem and pulled away protesters who were sitting on the ground, spraying them with water to disperse the crowd.
The war began when Hamas attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. About 20 of the remaining 50 hostages in Gaza are believed to still be alive.
