From All Roads.
San Marcos is one of the oldest continually inhabited sites in North America. And it’s home to the second-largest group of freshwater springs in Texas. Though nearly 200 geysers once burst from the water’s surface, they are now covered by Spring Lake, the headwaters of the San Marcos River.
The submerged springs can now be observed as disruptions to the sand on the lake’s floor. Endangered flora and fauna like the Texas blind salamander, fountain darters, and Texas wild rice all call these waters home. Visitors can take a peak at the mysteries below the surface from the floor of the glass bottom boat and through diving and snorkeling programs.
There’s a reason San Marcos is called "The Mermaid Capital of Texas". For decades, the legendary Aquarena Springs Show at Spring Lake featured fin-clad underwater performers called Aquamaids. The City honors their legacy with a collection or mermaid sculptures, created by local artists and on display throughout the city.
