Tensions high in Kenya on anniversary of Saba Saba uprising | DW News

From DW News.

Tensions are high on the streets of the Kenyan capital Nairobi, where police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse demonstrators. Anti-government rallies are planned in the city to mark the 35th anniversary of the bloody Saba Saba uprising in 1990, when Kenyans demanded a return to democracy. This year’s commemoration follows recent demonstrations by mostly young Kenyans against economic stagnation, corruption and police brutality. Several of these protests have led to violent clashes with police. DW’s Felix Maringa reports from Nairobi.
