From DW News.
Tesla in India? It could be a reality soon! But can Tesla thrive in a market full of cheaper EVs? When Elon Musk met Indian PM Narendra Modi in the US, rumors spread that Tesla is eager to enter India. The carmaker even announced some India-based jobs. However, India imposes a hefty 110% import duty on vehicles costing over $40,000, which includes Tesla. No new policy has been announced since the Modi-Musk meeting, but a 2024 EV scheme sparking a lot of discussion proposed reducing this duty to 15% if a company commits an investment of $500 million in India over five years. So far, no company, including Tesla, has shown significant interest.
Why? Two big reasons:
A) Tesla’s EVs are expensive for the Indian market.
B) There’s a significant lack of charging infrastructure.
