“The cruelty is the point”: Democratic lawmakers slam ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ during tour of facility

From Global News.

Democratic lawmakers from Florida travelled to a remote part of the Everglades to visit a federal immigration detention dubbed ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ on Saturday.

The centre got the nickname from its location, a vast subtropical wetland teeming with alligators that a Florida official said provides natural barriers, requiring minimal security.

"The cruelty is the point. This is a stunt. I mean, dropping flimsy infrastructure in the middle of the Everglades, in a swamp where they bragged about it being surrounded by alligators and pythons, I mean, the whole point is to, you know, look tough," said Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Democratic member of Congress.

The lawmakers, who said they have a legal right to visit the facility at any time, said their tour was cut short from one and a half hours to just half an hour, and they were not being allowed to take recording material inside.
