On the 11th of July 1897, three Swedish explorers set out to do what no humans had done before: to reach the North Pole—and to do it not by ship or sled, but by air. But when they launched from a windswept arctic island, carried forth by the winds in an untested hydrogen balloon… they vanished.
On the face of it, their story is a classic tale of overenthusiastic folly: an attempt to fly over the Pole by balloon, using untested technology to reach a place few understood. How could they have been so foolish? So unprepared? But really, the line that separates the most successful explorers and Arctic pioneers from the greatest failures is vanishingly thin.
Andrée and his two colleagues disappeared in 1897, when their balloon carried them north from its launch point in Spitsbergen. They weren’t discovered until 1930, their ruined camp buried under layers of ice on a remote island in the Arctic Circle. But preserved with their bodies were the diaries, photographs, and records that allow us to piece together their story—in tragic detail.
