Sister Vassa will not stay silent, even though her criticism of the Russian Orthodox Church and Patriarch Kirill has had serious consequences.
In Moscow, Patriarch Kirill has given his blessing to Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine, and many Russian Orthodox bishops have joined him. Meanwhile in Rome, a courageous, previously Russian Orthodox nun has found herself "defrocked" after she spoke out against church leaders. This is the worst thing that can happen to a nun, but Sister Vassa will not give in. She has switched to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and continues to speak out on social media against those who support Putin and the war. The US-born nun has hundreds of thousands of online followers. The bad news for Patriarch Kirill is that she’s also an accomplished theologian, having studied in Munich and Vienna, and in addition to her native English speaks Russian, Greek, German and Italian. Plus she has a doctorate in canon law, so she knows what can and cannot be done within the church. A report by Miodrag Soric.
