“They were inviting us here to die”: Tragedy strikes India’s Kumbh Mela pilgrimage

At least 30 people have been killed and more than 60 others injured in a crowd crush at the world’s largest religious gathering in northern India.

It happened as tens of millions gathered to take a dip in sacred river waters on the most auspicious day of the six-week Hindu festival.

One farmer said it felt like people were invited to the event to die. Eric Sorensen explains how the Kumbh Mela turned deadly.
