Thousands of women braved the rain in Lisbon on Sunday, to support the fight against breast cancer.

Women of all ages, many donning pink shirts, walked and ran up Lisbon’s main avenue to help raise funds. Husbands, boyfriends and children also joined in solidarity.

Lucia Alves, President of the Association of Support for Women with Breast Cancer, said such events are the only solution to help provide free medical care to women with cancer, in light of what she described as minimal government support.

In Portugal, around 9,000 new cases of breast cancer are detected each year, and more than 2,000 women die from the disease.
