Five people are dead and many more are injured after a tour bus crashed on an interstate in New York state on Friday, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) east of Buffalo.

Police say the driver lost control and the bus went into a median, rolled and ended up in a ditch. They say people inside the bus were ejected as the windows shattered.

Several ambulances and medical helicopters transported patients to hospital. The driver of the bus survived.

The New York State Thruway Authority shut down a lengthy stretch of the roadway Friday and urged drivers to avoid the area.
