In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on all automobile imports, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh condemned the move as a "betrayal" to Canadians, particularly impacting those in Windsor, Ontario.

Speaking in Windsor on Thursday, Singh said, "This feels like a betrayal, a gut punch for absolutely no reason."

Singh outlined a plan to protect Canadian manufacturing, asserting that "we’re not going to let a single piece of equipment, a single piece of manufacturing equipment leave this country." He proposed immediate Employment Insurance coverage for affected workers to help them manage their financial obligations during this trade crisis.

Furthermore, Singh called for initiatives to incentivize the purchase of Canadian-made vehicles, including a GST waiver, emphasizing the importance of supporting local industries.

"What we need to do is you need to build Canadian, we need to buy Canadian, and we need to drive Canadian," Singh added.
