Citing concerns about the city’s crime rate and general public safety, U.S. President Donald Trump Wednesday told reporters in the Oval Office that he is considering taking control of the Washington, D.C. police force.

"We have a capital that’s very unsafe," the Republican leader said. "We have to run D.C. This has to be the best-run place in the country."

Similar to Trump’s actions in California several weeks ago, where he unlawfully deployed the National Guard to dispel anti-ICE protests, Trump said a D.C. takeover could include “bringing in the National Guard, maybe very quickly.”

Trump’s comments come one day after he said the federal government could take over the District of Columbia if the local government “doesn’t get its act together.”
