U.S. President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of Washington, D.C. police has begun, with roughly 800 members of the National Guard being deployed to assist law enforcement in the capital.

Despite citizen protests and pushback from Mayor Muriel Bowser, Washington’s home rule is established by statute and is not considered an official state – meaning Trump has increased authority over this particular area.

Speaking with Global’s Miranda Anthistle, constitutional law expert and historian Joshua Kastenberg provides more details on Trump’s latest show of power that some might consider a step towards tyranny.
