Trump says China won’t attack Taiwan on his watch, island maintains it must rely on its own security

From Global News.

Responding to comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, a spokesperson for Taiwan’s foreign ministry said Tuesday the island must rely on itself for security.

In an interview on Fox News on Friday, Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping told him China would not invade Taiwan while Trump was in office.
“I will tell you, you know, you have a very similar thing with President Xi of China and Taiwan, but I don’t believe there’s any way it’s going to happen as long as I’m here. We’ll see,” he said.

“He told me, ‘I will never do it as long as you’re president.’ President Xi told me that, and I said, ‘Well, I appreciate that,’ but he also said, “but I am very patient, and China is very patient,” he added.

In response, Taiwan said it is closely monitoring interactions between senior U.S. and Chinese officials.

The United States is Taiwan’s most important international backer and arms supplier, though the two countries have no formal diplomatic ties or defence treaty.
