President Trump sparred with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell yesterday, during his visit to the central bank to inspect a renovation project that he’s been criticizing.
Presidents don’t normally visit the Fed, which strongly protects its independence, but Trump has been very critical of the central bank, saying it’s been too slow to cut interest rates. And then Trump tussled with Powell about the final cost of the Fed’s renovations, which are projected to hit $2.5 billion.
Waving a document, Trump claimed the costs had now reached $3.1 billion as Powell visibly shook his head in disagreement. Powell took a look at the paper and pointed out that Trump was citing a number for a separate building whose construction was completed five years ago.
After that, Trump appeared more conciliatory, avoiding delving into his recent criticism of Powell.
