India’s opposition leader Rahul Gandhi said on Thursday that he agrees with U.S. President Donald Trump that the "Indian economy is a dead economy."

"I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact," said Gandhi, adding that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government was “running the country into the ground."

Trump said the 25 per cent tariff on imports from India would take effect on Friday, in addition to unspecified penalties for Russian dealings and involvement in the BRICS grouping of nations.

Trump has also criticized India’s long-standing high tariffs on U.S. products, saying, “India has charged basically more tariffs than almost any other country. But now I’m in charge, and you just can’t do that.”
