Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that the sweeping new tariffs he’s introduced on Canadian goods are due to fentanyl flooding the U.S. from Canada is “totally bogus,” adding that his goal is the “total collapse” of the Canadian economy.

He reiterated his claim that Canada would "never" become the 51st U.S. state.

Trudeau told Canadians the tariffs could "do damage" to the economy, but said the federal government has been working on measures to support Canadians. “This is going to be tough,” he added.
