U.S. President Donald Trump launched his global tariff assault into overdrive on Wednesday, announcing a 50 per cent duty on goods from Brazil, to start on August 1.
Trump’s Brazil tariff order came in a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva that vented anger over what he called the "witch hunt" trial of Lula’s right-wing predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, and added to an increasingly bitter public feud with Lula.
"President Trump’s letter justifying this new tariff refers to the country’s legal, political, and ideological issues, so it constitutes interference in the country’s internal affairs, using a trade relationship as an excuse and based on premises that are not necessarily true," said IBMEC economist Gilberto Braga at interview with Reuters.
The U.S. is Brazil’s second-largest trading partner after China and has a rare trade surplus with the world’s top economic power.
