From Global News.
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is pushing back after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the federal takeover of the capital’s police force on Monday.
Trump’s “unsettling and unprecedented” decision comes as part of his mandate to combat crime and homelessness in the U.S. capital – a region where Bowser said “access to our democracy is tenuous."
“We’re not a state, we don’t control the D.C. National Guard, we don’t have senators or full autonomy,” Bowser told reporters shortly after Trump’s announcement. “Limited home rule gives the federal government the ability to intrude on our autonomy in many ways,” she added.
To help “beautify” the city, Trump’s efforts will also involve the deployment of the National Guard – echoing a controversial decision made by the Republican leader earlier in the year, where he deployed the force in Los Angeles to mitigate mass anti-ICE protests.
Trump has alluded to federal police takeovers becoming the norm in other cities that are "very bad" for crime rates, including New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles.
