The UK parliament passes an emergency law to stop the last British factory that can make steel from scratch shutting down, allowing the government to take control of the Chinese-owned British Steel plant. At a rare weekend session, House of Commons speaker Lyndsay Hoyle says a royal assent has been granted after both houses of parliament approved the bill which the government said would prevent the site’s blast furnaces going out and help save what is left of the UK’s depleted steel industry.
