UK reassesses ‘flawed’ domestic abuse risk tool

From Reuters.

Britain’s government has commissioned a project that a leading charity hopes will lead to a review of its long-standing domestic abuse risk assessment tool after years of criticism that the questionnaire and how it is applied underestimates the danger victims face — sometimes with deadly consequences.

Bethany Fields was one of the many victims affected by the flawed use of the DASH tool, which has been used by police officers, social workers and other professionals since 2009.

A month before she was killed by her ex-boyfriend, Fields walked into a police station in northern England to report him for domestic abuse due to his increasingly abusive and controlling behavior.

But she was not classified as high risk.
