Britain will recognize Palestinian statehood by the next session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September, unless Israel “takes substantive steps” to end the suffering in Gaza, including agreeing to a ceasefire, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Tuesday.

The United Kingdom is calling on both Israel and Hamas to commit to long-term sustainable peace in Gaza, and for Hamas to release the remaining hostages.

Starmer made the announcement after recalling his cabinet during summer holidays to discuss a proposed new peace plan and efforts to increase aid deliveries to the besieged enclave.

Successive British governments have said they would eventually recognize a Palestinian state without offering a timetable or necessary conditions.
