US-Canada border towns afraid of tariff war impacts

From Global News.

Stanstead, Que., Canada and Derby Line, Vt., U.S. share more than just a border. The two towns share fire departments, waterlines, buildings and the unique Haskell Library, which straddles both countries.

Escalating trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. have raised fears of increased border restrictions.

Mayor Jody Stone said he was concerned about the impact of the tariffs on the “intertwined” communities where people work to and from either side of the border. “We are afraid that they’re (Homeland security) going to lock it (Haskell Library) down even more than it has been,” Stone said.

Caught between tariffs and counter-tariffs, the community now faces uncertainty in its future.
