The US Department of Homeland Security said that it arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a student leader of Colombia University’s protests against Israel’s war in Gaza. He is one of the most prominent faces of the university’s protest movement. The news came after Donald Trump vowed to deport foreign pro-Palestinian protesters and threatened to cut federal funding to institutions he said were not doing enough to combat anti-Seminism. US campuses like Columbia’s in New York were rocked by student protests against Israel’s war in Gaza which was ignited by an attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas on 7 October 2023.
