Hastily-arranged and heavily one-sided, the U.S. and Russia met through a mutual friend in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday with an eye towards ending the war in Ukraine.

“A half-baked negotiator could have settled this years ago,” said U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

“It looks like a conversation between partners rather than a negotiation between adversaries,” says Maria Popova of McGill University.

But in Kyiv, it brings worry about why a country under active attack was not asked to join the peace talks.
