Venezuela has released 10 jailed American citizens and permanent residents in exchange for scores of migrants that were deported by the U.S. states to a mega-prison in El Salvador as part of the Trump administration’s recent immigration crackdown.

The arrangement represents a diplomatic achievement for Venzuelan President Nicolás Maduro and helps U.S. President Donald Trump in his goal of bringing home Americans jailed abroad.

Central to the deal are nearly 300 Venezuelan migrants who were jailed in a notorious Salvadoran prison as part of an agreement in which the Trump administration agreed to pay $6 million.

The U.S. government justified the move by tying the Venezuelan migrants to the violent street gang Tren de Aragua.
