U.S. President Trump is coming under fire for his decision to deploy 2,000 California National Guard troops to Los Angeles to respond to immigration protests, a move that comes against the objections of California Gov. Gavin Newsome.

“It’s very disturbing for all Americans. It doesn’t matter whether if you are from a red county or a blue county, these are two assaults on basic American ideals,” says Retired U.S. major-general Randy Manner.

Manner says the troop deployments are infringing on the right to freedom of speech “because the vast majority of those people are peaceably demonstrating their opinions.”

He also adds “the degree to which the federal government is coming in and smashing state’s rights,” is yet another assault.
