Rep. John Larson, D-Conn., questioned U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer about why Russia is not subject to new tariffs during a House committee hearing Wednesday.
Larson, the ranking member, asked Greer whether leaving Russia, Belarus, Cuba and North Korea was "an oversight, or is the president trying to reinvigorate trade with Russia?"
Greer responded that those countries are already subject to congressional sanctions and embargoes.
"That’s certainly the right answer," he said. "We should not have normal trade relations with those countries."
Greer testified before the House Ways and Means Committee Wednesday, a day after appearing at the Senate Finance Committee. His testimony came as President Donald Trump announced he would pause global tariffs imposed on many countries that had just gone into effect at midnight. Trump also announced he would raise tariffs on Chinese imported goods to 125%.
