WATCH: Republican Senator Tillis denounces Trump’s big spending bill

From PBS NewsHour.

In a speech on the Senate floor Sunday, Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., denounced President Donald Trump’s sprawling tax and spending package dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Tillis was one of two Republican senators who voted against advancing the bill to further debate Saturday night, citing the proposed billions in Medicaid cuts. He said that while he supported the House’s version of the Medicaid cuts, he said Trump would be breaking a promise with the current bill.

“We owe it to the American people, and I owe it to the people of North Carolina, to withhold my affirmative vote until it’s demonstrated to me that we’ve done our homework, we’re going to make sure we fulfill the promise. Then I can feel good about a bill that I’m willing to vote for,” said Tillis on the Senate floor. “But until that time, I will be withholding my vote.”

According to a KFF fact sheet published in May, 3,012,000 children and adults are enrolled in North Carolina Medicaid.Following Tillis’ vote on Saturday, Trump attacked him in a series of Truth Social posts, calling the senator "a talker and complainer" and saying he would be meeting "numerous people" who wanted to run against Tillis in the primaries. A day later, Tillis announced that he would not seek reelection for a third term in 2026.
