From PBS NewsHour.

President Donald Trump is "looking into" sending U.S. citizens convicted of violent crimes to prisons in El Salvador, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday.

"He would only consider this if legal for Americans who are the most violent, egregious repeat offenders of crime, who nobody in this room wants living in their communities," she said during a news briefing.

Trump has deported over 200 Venezuelan migrants the administration claims are members of violent gangs. to El Salvador. They are being incarcerated in the country’s notorious CECOT mega-prison. The deportation is being challenged in court.

During a meeting with El Salvador’s president Monday, Trump said that “homegrown criminals” should be sent to the Central American country.Watch PBS News for daily, breaking and live news, plus special coverage. We are home to PBS News Hour, ranked the most credible and objective TV news show.
