WATCH: Trump says he and Putin ‘made some headway’ toward Ukraine war deal

From PBS NewsHour.

President Donald Trump said Friday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin “made some headway” on Ukraine during their summit in Alaska.

Trump, who called the meeting “very profound” and “productive,” said that while there were “many, many points that we agreed on,” there were “a couple of big ones that we haven’t quite gotten there.” He said he will call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, NATO and other officials about the discussion, which lasted nearly three hours.

“Many points were agreed to. There are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there,” Trump said. “We didn’t get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there.”

Neither Trump nor Putin revealed specific details of their discussions or possible agreements. The two leaders did not take questions from reporters.

At the end of Trump’s remarks, Putin said in English that perhaps their next meeting should take place in Moscow. Trump called the proposal “interesting” and that he might “get a little heat on that one, but I could see it possibly happening.”

The summit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a U.S. military installation in Anchorage, Alaska, was the first time Trump and Putin have met in person since Trump’s return to the White House earlier this year.
