White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized a Wednesday federal court ruling that blocked many of President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, calling it "another example of judicial overreach."
"Three judges of the U.S. Court of International Trade disagreed and brazenly abused their judicial power to usurp the authority of President Trump," Leavitt said Thursday in a news briefing. The White House has appealed the decision.
The three judges ruled late Wednesday that the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which Trump cited for ordering increases in taxes on imports, does not give the president unilateral authority to impose sweeping tariffs.
The decision blocks Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, but it doesn’t affect other tariffs on foreign steel, aluminum and autos.
