“We are not in normal times,” Joly says after Trump threatens Canada with 35% tariffs

From Global News.

Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly defended the federal government’s response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war amid criticisms that Prime Minister Mark Carney is not responding strong enough to Trump’s tariff threats.

Joly said Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration would not negotiate in public, but added that Canada is the “only country in the world” outside of China that has imposed “so many” counter-tariffs.

However, Joly added that Canada needs to strengthen its bonds with other allies as it deals with an American administration that is becoming increasingly protectionist and closing off its market.

“We are not in normal times and economic diplomacy is more important than ever,” she said.

Trump has threatened to raise tariff rates on imported Canadian goods to 35 per cent on Aug. 1
