What does this mean for the German government and Chancellor Merz? | DW News

From DW News.

One of Germany’s largest political parties is in power — and in a deep crisis. The Social Democrats (SPD) are part of the current governing coalition, and their poll numbers are dismal. The SPD is meeting in Berlin this week, and the biggest question is: Can the SPD save itself?
Rifts on foreign policy have become visible within the center-left party. Some are unhappy about what they see as militaristic policies. Tensions have erupted over post-Ukraine militarization, backed by the new government’s vice chancellor, and a pacifist faction calling for a return to détente with Russia. This faction has even issued a manifesto urging reengagement with Moscow, which risks exacerbating the internal conflict.
