The Israeli military has begun a new offensive in Deir el-Balah, a central city in Gaza. Israeli tanks have entered the city, with soldiers operating on the ground. This is the first major operation in Deir el-Balah since the start of the war in Gaza 21 months ago. Some of the remaining hostages held by Hamas are believed to be in the area. The city is home to thousands of Palestinians who have fled fighting elsewhere in the territory.
