Cardinals filed in for the first session of the conclave on May 7, in what Vatican experts say is mostly pomp and circumstance. In a ritual dating back to medieval times, the cardinals filed into the Vatican’s frescoed Sistine Chapel after a public Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica to begin their secret ritual for a successor to Pope Francis, who died last month.
