What we know about the link between cannabis and psychosis

A growing pile of research is linking high-potency cannabis use to an elevated risk of dissociative episodes, including schizophrenia.

A new report in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) finds concentrations of THC – the psychoactive component in cannabis – have increased five-fold in Canada over the past 20 years.

And with higher potency comes a greater risk of psychosis among frequent users, the study suggests.

Nivrita Ganguly speaks with Dr. Leslie Buckley, Chief of Addictions at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), about what is known and not known about the link between cannabis and psychosis.
