What’s behind the mass protests across Turkey? | DW News

From DW News.

Turkey’s interior ministry says more than a thousand people have been arrested since the start anti-government demonstrations in the country – the largest in more than a decade.
Tens of thousands of protesters again took to the streets across Turkey on Sunday, defying a ban on rallies. They are angry at the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul and a key rival of president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Demonstrators accuse the Turkish president of trying to get rid of a major opponent ahead of elections in 2028. Imamoglu was taken into custody pending a trial on corruption charges.
With further protests expected in major cities, here are some people speaking out on the streets of Istanbul.
