Talks in Geneva on the world’s first UN treaty to curb plastic pollution are close to collapse. Countries remain divided over whether to limit the production of newly made plastics and regulate hazardous chemicals. The final day began in crisis after key measures on the full life cycle of plastics were removed from the draft. Oil-producing nations are resisting any limits on output. Negotiators warn the three-year effort could fail without a last-minute breakthrough. Experts warn plastic production will triple by 2060 without urgent action.
