When Baltej Singh Dhillon applied to join the RCMP in 1988, he had to fight for his right to wear a beard and turban. It took years for changes to the dress code to be made, allowing Dhillon to graduate to active duty in 1991. Dhillon retired in 2019 after a nearly 30-year career in the national police force that saw him rise to the rank of inspector. Just last month, he was appointed to the senate by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
