The RCMP has the largest law enforcement land fleet in North America, consisting of approximately 12,000 vehicles.
Close to 1,600 vehicles are decommissioned each year, along with 4,700 light duty vehicles like ATVs and snowmobiles.
The RCMP used to sell the vehicles at auction, bringing in around $8 million a year. But after a Nova Scotia man went on a killing spree in 2020 driving a restored police cruiser, Canada issued a moratorium on selling RCMP vehicles.
So, for four years, these vehicles have piled up in storage lots across Canada awaiting a date with the crusher. Global’s Melissa Ridgen has an inside look at one of these compounds.
