Wife of mistakenly deported man pleads for return

From PBS NewsHour.

The wife of a Salvadoran man living legally in Maryland who was mistakenly deported last month pleaded for her husband’s return Tuesday, saying President Donald Trump and El Salvador’s president need to "stop playing political games."

"Our ability to fight back against these governments are testimonies to the spirit of fight and restraint that God has given us," Jennifer Vasquez Sura said. "We will continue standing strong and we will never give up."

U.S. officials deported her husband, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, last month as part of the White House’s efforts to send suspected gang members to a notorious prison in El Salvador. The administration later said that his deportation was “because of an administrative error.”

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court said that the White House must facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return. But, Attorney General Pam Bondi said Monday during an Oval Office meeting with Trump and El Salvador’s president that it’s "up to El Salvador if they want to return him," and if they do, then the U.S. would "facilitate" it.

Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, said at the same meeting that he won’t return Abrego Garcia and called the idea "preposterous.”

"Despite the challenges we continue to face with the U.S. and the Salvadoran government, I hope that the strength of faith and the resilience within us will keep us standing," Vasquez Sura said.
