Hundreds of visitors stepped into the steamy, humid confines of the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco, California, to take a whiff of the infamously smelly corpse flower in full bloom.
“Chanel,” as this corpse flower is lovingly called, began blooming at the Conservatory on July 8, drawing visitors to take in its aroma, which the flower emits during its bloom and uses to attract pollinators.
The flower takes 10 years to have its first bloom, according to Gardens of Golden Gate Park. It will take another 3 to 5 years before its next bloom. The park staff estimate that this flower is 15 to 20 years old.
