Former U.S. representative Matt Gaetz withdrew from the running to become U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general on Thursday, following continued scrutiny over a federal sex trafficking investigation.

The Republican’s announcement came a day after he met with senators in an effort to win their support for his confirmation to lead the Justice Department.

Gaetz’s withdrawal is a blow to Trump’s push to install steadfast loyalists in his incoming administration. Reggie Cecchini explains.
