World War 1 changed the world in countless ways, but one thing that doesn’t get talked about much is the way it spurred advancement in cosmetic surgery. With advances in medicine and the particular horror of trench warfare, thousands of soldiers came home with terrible facial injuries, causing them to be treated as pariahs.
